Your Total Tax Bill

Your Total Tax Bill

Here are the facts:

For the past four years the Town Board has not raised your town taxes. Plus the rate has stayed even at $4.32.

Before the latest school tax increase, the combined Town, County and School tax rate was $ 36.19.

When taking into account the School District’s portion of $ 22.53 per thousand, the Webster School District makes up 62 percent of each tax dollar you pay.

Monroe County’s rate of $9.34 per thousand makes up to 26% of your tax bill while the Town’s portion of $4.32 is just 12% of your combined tax bill.

Town = 12%        County = 26%         School = 62%

What is disappointing is that this year the Webster Board of Education had numerous opportunities to lower their tax rate in their budget, but failed to do so because the School Board felt that a point 49 percent increase was something Webster residents could afford.

I was told directly by a school district official that the school budget was “only going up point 49 percent; to which I replied that it is still a tax increase!”

This latest tax increase by the Webster School Board is counter-productive as Webster is in competition with other municipalities in Monroe County in an attempt to bring new development to our community.

A major obstacle to our goal is that any potential developer is going to look at the school tax rate of 62 percent and may have second thoughts about locating their business here.
That would surely hurt growth and revenue for both the Town and Village governments; something the Board of Education should seriously consider when putting together future budgets.
