Last weekend both of the fire departments in Webster, the West Webster Fire Department and North East Joint Fire District, held open houses to encourage new memberships into their ranks. I wanted to encourage any Webster resident that has a few extra hours a week available to seriously look at becoming a volunteer fire person.
I cannot begin to tell you how appreciative the Webster Town Board is in having two volunteer fire departments here in Webster protecting our homes, on-call 24 hours a day 365 days a year. It takes a special person to dedicate their time for training and then their service to the Webster community.
These dedicated volunteers are also saving you, the Webster taxpayer, money by being a volunteer fire department versus a paid fire department. This is only a guess, but I would estimate that your current fire rate is $1.07 per thousand per household, and a paid fire department would be in the neighborhood of $5.00 per thousand on your home. In fact, other towns in Monroe County that do not have volunteer fire departments are already paying that.
So, if you have the time and want to volunteer, please stop at a fire house in your home district and talk to any of the fire personnel about joining and helping the Webster community. If you see a Webster volunteer firefighter in your travels around Webster, be sure to thank them for what they do to make Webster safe and also save your taxpayer dollars.
