A couple of weeks ago I wrote about residents of Webster receiving a Property Relief check from New York State for $185.00 and added to that would be a Property Tax Freeze amount for the county and fire districts staying under the tax cap in 2016. All checks should be received by Webster residents by December 31st, and as of this writing I know of many residents who have yet to receive their check.
I received mine last Saturday for $185.00 the exact amount of the Property Tax Relief program, but nothing for the Property Tax Freeze portion. After calling my three kids, all residents of Webster and property owners, to ask what they received from New York State there was no rhyme or reason to the amounts that they received. Their amounts varied from $209.00 to $225.00 and mine was $185.00. How and why?
So, Monday morning I called the New York Tax Department and after a 25 minute wait on the phone I spoke to a very nice lady who did not have any idea as to how the checks where calculated. I then called the Batavia Office of Real Property Tax Services and again I received no answer as to why my check was lower than either of my daughters who live close by to dad. I was told someone would call me back but as of submitting this article I have heard nothing.
What should have happened is the State of New York should have included the formula and description of how they came to your tax relief and tax freeze number on the rebate check. This would be something similar to your paycheck which shows itemized deductions and how your paycheck was arrived. However, why would New York State want to make the taxpaying citizens more informed about what the state does when it is better to keep us in the dark? Just more smoke and mirrors from good old New York State.
I will continue to look in to this and wait for the phone call that promised to me.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas from my family to yours and wish you all a very memorable holiday season.
