Now that the winter snow season is here I would like to remind property owners, and those that hire independent snow plow operators that plow your driveway, that it is against the law to push snow across a highway and it is illegal to push snow into the road and leave it there.
The law clearly states, “Any person who drops, or permits to be dropped or thrown, upon any highway any destructive or injurious material which interferes with the safe use of the Highway shall immediately remove the same or cause it to be removed.” Or another section of the law 1219 states, “No person shall throw or deposit upon any highway any glass bottle, glass, nails, tacks, wire, cans, snow, or any other substance likely to injure any person, animal, or vehicle upon such highway.”
Our highway crews have witnessed this type of action being done during the last snow storm, and it is because of this that the town crews have to take more time going back to clean up our roads after independent plow operators have left large amounts of snow in the road.
Residents PLEASE inform your snow plow operators not to do this or tickets will be issued by the Webster Police Department or the Highway Superintendent. We totally understand that you dislike like the fact that after you have worked hard to plow your driveway either by hand or by snow blower that it is depressing to see the big yellow truck come down the road and fill in the edge of your driveway. However, we live on Lake Ontario in a snow belt area and we just have to deal with the conditions until spring arrives. So please keep the snow on your property and not in the roads making more work for our highway crew.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy, safe and healthy New Year!
