Heavy Rains and NO Flooding in Webster!

Posted on August 22, 2011 at 4:22 PM by PattiAnn Schultz

Well, it feels like summer is almost over with and fall with its changing colors will be here soon. This year the weather has been strange to say the least. Winter was rough with a lot of snow and wind and the spring was very wet with rain almost every day. The July summer was very hot with no rain but the rain has been plenty in the month of August. We shall see what fall and the holidays will bring us to close out the year.

With the unique weather conditions this year, my point of this column would be that the drainage and flooding during heavy and normal rain falls this year have not been an issue. The Town has 103 retention and detention ponds spread out with in the town to control the flow of water that will enter Lake Ontario.

The Highway Department has a crew that works on drainage daily except during the winter. They work on cleaning out streams and making sure the ponds are clean of debris so the flow to the lake can continue without interruption. This is a large task when taking in to account the heavy rain falls this year and the amount of water that flows after one of these large storms.

We see on TV the damage water can do to homes near rivers and streams and I am grateful to the Highway Department for their tireless attention to making our drainage system work here in Webster so that homes here are not damaged as a result of heavy rains.
