Department of Public Works
The Department of Public Works consists of the Building Maintenance, Engineering, Building, Fire Marshall, and Planning & Zoning. The Department also works closely with the Sewer, Highway, and Assessing Departments.
The Engineering Department is responsible for reviewing all subdivision applications and plans and ensuring that construction takes place in accordance with the Town specifications. They also maintain the map archives. For the past several years the Engineering Department has been engaged in a project to digitize their records to provide easier access to information. The maps have been scanned and infrastructure such as sanitary and storm sewers have been added to our Graphical Information System (GIS) files. This allows us to display multiple data sources on a single area for reference purposes such as underground utilities, grading, and aerial photographs.
The Building Department is responsible for administering the New York State Building Code. They issue building permits for a variety of things and ensure that they comply with the Building Code and the Town Code. Obtaining a permit is the responsibility of the property owner. There is more information on this web site in the Public Works section. Be sure to allow time for the Department to review and issue a request for a building permit. If you are planning on selling your house you will be asked to provide proof that building permits have been issued for all improvements on the property.
