It is amazing as the year 2001 comes to a close of the number of good news stories happening in our community of Webster. I have seen many communities celebrate - with good reason - one single event that highlights civic pride in a major achievement.

Right now, Webster has so many items to cheer about. I hope we all pause to appreciate these events collectively and realize the foresight of those who coined our motto decades ago that rings so genuinely to this day: "Webster, Where Life is Worth Living!"

Webster, NY, on the big screen: what a kick it is to see countless familiar images of our town and village jump off the big screen in the world premiere of the movie "Checkout."

This is not a movie that merely used Webster as a film location and then fictionalized the names so no one could make out any real identities; this is a film about Webster, New York, the Hegedorn family and their long-time local business, Hegedorn's IGA hometown Supermarket.

Many familiar faces are included in the final version, shot in various locales around Webster and Rochester. Some of the movie's undertones and actual scenes take a little poetic license in depicting Webster as more rural than we know it to be at the beginning of the 21st Century.

But in the end, the film is true to the real character of Webster, ending on a positive note because of Webster people coming together and showing their community, hometown pride.

Unfortunately, anyone who missed seeing the movie this past weekend will have to wait for an indefinite period of time for another showing. Now come the task of promoting the film to the movie industry, in the hopes it will be picked up for widespread distribution.

Congratulations and best of luck to all those involved in making "Check Out." We all hope that it becomes a huge success!

Incredible Warriors varsity football team repeats as state champion: No doubt, Webster has more than its share of successes surrounding Webster youth, from participating in competitions in academics, to music, art and a variety of sports. Some of the biggest excitement, however, has been generated by Webster's High School football program.

That was clear in 1999 - the first time the Warriors brought home the trophy as New York State Champions. And now Webster swells with pride again, as the Warriors have repeated this feat- winning the final big game in Syracuse to become the new 2001 New York State Class AA Football Champions.

Congratulations to Coach Tony Bianchi, all the players, their families and the many staff members and volunteers who support Warriors football. And yes, our Highway Superintendent Barry Deane already has plans to change the signs to include the year "2001"- we just hope they all stay where they are placed on the highways to show the world our community's enthusiasm.

Chamber rolls out revamped Web site: More congratulations are due, this time to the staff and volunteers at the Webster Chamber of Commerce. At last week's Chamber meeting, the new and improved Chamber Web site was unveiled.

This site is greatly enhanced from the former version and paints a bright picture of current-day Webster. In addition, it promotes Webster for the future, advocating this area as a great location for businesses. I urge our residents and business owners to visit the site located at www.websterchamber.com.

There are so many other great and positive things happening: White Christmas in the Village happens this Thursday, (Dec. 6), where people will see many businesses that have recently opened in the village, the opening of the new indoor soccer complex and continued operation of the ice arena. Also, you will see all of the new building going on with the pool and new fields being build for the Webster Athletic Association for girls softball at Ridge Park.

There are too many good things about Webster to highlight in this limited space, and I know people will think of the many things not mentioned here. I hope those people, too, will pause to think of what it is they have an interest in, and how it is performing in Webster today. I hope they will be grateful for whatever activity it is they have an opportunity to participate in, in our great Town of Webster.
